Butterfield, Miller break Jo-Hi records

Eric Butterfield goes for the record at the Jo-Hi Invitational on Saturday in Joseph. Butterfield broke the Jo-Hi pole vault record that has stood for the past 20 years.

Joseph seniors Eric Butterfield and Licia Miller broke the Joseph school and Jo-Hi Invitational pole vault records Saturday at Joseph. Butterfield cleared the bar at 13' 2" in the early afternoon before snow squalls converged on the often frigid meet. Butterfield's vault broke the 20 year mark of 13'1" set by Mark Lavender from Pilot Rock on a warm 70 degree day in 1983.

Miller's vault of 9' 11 1/2" broke the meet record of 9' 7" set by DeLeah Wiles from Elgin in 2001. Miller also posted first place finishes in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13 seconds flat and ran the anchor leg for the first place Joseph 4X400 relay team crossing the finish line in 4:25.15. The team of Miller, Denea Micka, Tiffany Zimmer and Darci Witherrite fought off a charge from second place Wallowa with Miller blowing past meet 400 meter champ Amanda Wilson of Wallowa on the final leg to record the win.

Joseph's Cole Lathrop won top honors in the high jump clearing the bar at 6' 2" with Wallowa leaper Randy Spaur finishing in fourth at 5' 8". A second place finish was in store for Spaur in the long jump as he hit the mark at 19'6".

Lathrop also won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 17.36. Enterprise's Tony Swart finished the race in second with a time of 17.98. Swart grabbed top honors in the 300 meter hurdles taking the number one spot with a time of 43.19. His teammate Jason Douglas finished in second at 45.58.

Joseph big man Mike Marks tossed the shot put 44' 10 1/2" for a first place and personal best. Marks finished second in the discus with a throw of 133' 0".

EHS spiker Clay Freels went into the record books with a first place 141'6" throw in the javelin. Teammate Michael Swart took second in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:37.12.

The Joseph 1600 meter relay team of Lathrop, Randall Eschler, Corey Otten and Triston Patton took the number one spot in 3:36.80 with Wallowa second and EHS third.

Eschler also finished second in the 400 meters in 53.76.

The Wallowa girls dominated their half of the competition compiling 169 points with second place Powder Valley 89 points behind at 80.

The Cougs scored points in every event except for the pole vault.

Lynique Oveson ended the afternoon with two individual first place finishes. Oveson powered her way to the top spot in the javelin tossing the spike 104' 0". She went on to win the 800 meters with a time of 2:38.82 ahead of Enterprise's Julie Vernarski second place 2:46. Oveson also ran on Wallowa's first place 4X100 meter relay team comprised of Oveson, Amber Josi, Samatha Silveria and Megan Haga and placed second in the 1600 meter relay team with Amanda Wilson in for Haga.

Wilson took first place kudos in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:02.64.

EHS senior Maya Waldron cleared the bar at 5' 4" in the high jump. Wilson finished tied for second with Shauna Nelson of North Powder with a jump of 5' 2".

Distance guru Hayley Oveson battled Mother Nature and her competition to cruise to a first place 11:03.36 in the 3000 meters. EHS runner Krista Stangel was second with a time of 11:34.19.

Sarah Bomberger out tossed the competition in the shot put with a first place throw of 34' 6". The Wallowa senior ended the afternoon with a second place finish in the discus with a toss of 95' 10".

Larae Guillory came close but finished second in the 1500 meters with a time of 5:35.00.

Other second placers at the Jo-Hi included Enterprise's Valerie Davis, 31' 2 1/2" in the triple jump; Joseph's Denae Micka, 27.75 in the 200 meters and Wallowa's Caitlin Turner 54.50 in the 300 meter hurdles.
