The Wallowa Cougars were close but came up short over the weekend, dropping its regular season Old Oregon League opener to Jordan Valley 52-45 in overtime at Jordan Valley. Wallowa had a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter only to find a lid on the basket. "We missed five, three point shots in a row during the last four minutes of regulation," said Cougs coach Gerry McLain. Jordan Valley outscored the Cougs 11-8 in the fourth quarter to tie the contest at 44 all, forcing the game to OT. The Mustangs carried their momentum into the OT period with an 8-1 run for the win. McLain said that the Cougs came out flat missing four field goals in the overtime period. "The pressure got to us," he said.

The Mustang's Bryan Grenke and Wallowa's Caleb Pringle tied with 13 points each to lead all scoring in the game. Patrick Green dropped in 12 and Ryan Harshfield had nine for Wallowa.

WHS traveled to Baker City for their final preseason game on Saturday, falling to the Bulldogs 45-43. "The kids came out flat after the long road trip from the night before," McLain said. "They were just a little off."

The Bulldogs held a slim 19-15 advantage at the half and WHS battled its way back in the final period but came up short.

Harshfield led the pack as high scorer with 20.

The Lady Cougs continue to struggle as their regular season got underway on Friday at Jordan Valley as the Mustangs took control of the contest winning 35-23. The girls had a lot of opportunities for a win late in the game according to WHS coach Greg Oveson. "We missed a to of wide open shots close to the basket," Oveson said. " We need to slow down, be more patient and do more talking on defense."

Lynique Oveson led the Lady Cougs with 11 points.

Wallowa played non league opponent Baker City on Saturday, falling to the Bulldogs 43-31. "It was probably our best game so far this season," Oveson said. "We played great defense," he added.

Lynique and Mysha Oveson scored 14 and ten points respectively in the match up.
