Families part of hot Lostine River Run

Morgan Shaw, 7, Wallowa, finished the 5K Run in 26:00, followed closely behind by her father, Mike Shaw, who claimed he had trouble keeping up with his speedy little girl.

A total of 148 runners and walkers ranging in age from 3 to 84 took part in the 30th Lostine River Run on a hot summer morning Saturday, July 7.

Many local families participated in the event, sponsored by Wallowa County Rotary. However, participants hailed from four different states.

The 5K (3.1 miles) and 10K (6.2 miles) events both started at 9 a.m. up the Lostine Canyon road, and the first person across the finish line in front of Providence Academy – Barry Dew, 47, of Baker City – completed the 5K run in only 17 minutes and 55 seconds.

Most runners commented on both the beautiful scenery and the heat. “It was just beautiful, running along the river in the shade, and then you’d run back into the oven,” said one.

Plaques were given to overall winners and top Masters (over 40) in the 5K and 10K runs, with medals and or/ribbons presented to the top five finishers in each age group in each run and walk at a ceremony on the steps of Providence Academy.

The 1Mile Run, which attracted mostly children, was raced at 10 a.m.; winners were Foster Hobbs, 10, of Lostine (7:28) followed closely by his brother, Sebastian, 12. Ella Coughlan, 11, Joseph was the fastest girl (8:23).

Phyllis Manes, 84, Enterprise, completed the one mile walk in 17:47, while Sharon Sherlock, 75, also of Enterprise, finished in 21:08.

A couple minutes behind Dew in the 5K Run, Joe Nelson, 37, of Enterprise, and Frank Stumpo, 15, Shelley, Idaho, battled for second and third place, finishing in a dead heat at 19:37. Both were first in their age groups. Jackie Wanta, 16, 22:26, was the top female 5K runner.

Top 5K Walk finishers were Edward Flint, 64, Enterprise, for the men and Jeanette Johnson, 35, Lostine, for the women.

The longest run attracted 64 racers. Overall male finisher was Eliot McKinnon, 26, La Grande, 33:30; and female winner was Petra Evans, 40, Joseph, 41:00.
