Hafer racers beat the heat

Rob Ruth/ChieftainFour of the morning's division winners can be spotted in this group moments after the start of Saturday's race: No. 741, Alex Graffunder, top 5K male; No. 768, Tyler Knapp, first-place miler; No. 827, Isabelle Tingelstad, 1st 5K female finisher; No. 786, Dawn Mist Movich-Fields, 1st 10K female.

ENTERPRISE — Walkers and runners from near and far turned out Saturday morning at Wallowa Memorial Hospital for the eighth annual Amy Hafer Race for Cancer Awareness, a fun event that honors the memory of a Wallowa High School grad who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2007 at age 38.

Warming up was the easiest part of participating in this year’s event, which was held during a heat wave that would send Saturday’s temperature soaring close to 100 degrees. Fortunately, the temp was still only around 82 when everyone left the starting line at 9 a.m.

Stacy Green, director of the Wallowa Valley Health Care Foundation, sponsor of the annual race, said the hot weather reduced participation from last year’s record turnout. Approximately 180 signed up this year, compared to around 200 in 2014.

Times were recorded for runners and walkers at one-mile and 5K distances, and for 10K runners.

Tyler Knapp, 8, of Enterprise, was the first athlete across the finish line, completing his mile run in 7:42.3. The morning’s top female miler was 7-year-old Owyhee Harguess, who finished in 7:54.7.

Overall winners at the 5K distance were Alex Graffunder, 15, of Union, whose recorded time was 18:38.8, and Joseph’s Isabelle Tingelstad, 16, who came in at 24:57.4.

Timothy Vandervlugt, 50, of La Grande, was first in the 10K at 38:32.5, and Enterprise runner Dawn Mist Movich-Fields, 16, took the distance’s top honor among women at 42:59.4.
