IRRIGON - The Enterprise-Joseph Cubs softball team dropped a 6-2 state quarterfinal matchup to the Irrigon Knights Friday afternoon, ending the team's season.
Cub hurler Andrea Schaefer went the distance, but labored a bit, throwing 132 pitches. Only one of the six Irrigon runs were earned off Schaefer, but she walked seven. She struck out nine and gave up three hits, but three costly errors behind her spelled out the difference.
Both Andrea and Whitney Schaefer led the way at the dish for the Cubs, going 2 for 3 with a pair of singles a piece. Tonya Neil and Jesse Kohlhepp drove in the two runs for the Cubs off Irrigon pitcher Noelle Wright.
The Cubs close a banner season with an impressive 21-4 overall record and a Special District 6 championship, going 15-1 in the conference. League foe Union dropped Special District 5 champion Pilot Rock 2-0 and will move on the state semifinals against Riddle. Irrigon will play either Gaston or Monroe in the other semifinal matchup.
