The Gayle Beck Invitational is in the books for another year. Although the Alpine Ladies agree that the tourney was great fun, they’re thankful it’s over.

What is it about tournament play that gals either love or hate?

There are women who enjoy the competition, the challenge, they hit the ball well and score low, while others in the higher handicap range dislike the pressure and lack confidence in a tourney setting.

“That’s only partially true,” says Carol Marr, invitational chairman. “All golfers are nervous to begin with, but soon relax. What’s most depressing is out-of-town participation ... the whole purpose of the invitational. Six invite letters go out early June, but response is close to nil. Whether it’s distance/travel time, the expense, other commitments or work schedule, we only know they don’t show.”

Although Alpine Meadows ladies didn’t have a gangbuster turnout for the Aug. 11 tournament, they showed gracious hospitality to those who did come — four golfers from La Grande Country Club and one from Buffalo Peak. Joining the out-of-towners, three locals ─ Mandy Decker, Amy Stangel and Tori Suto ─ also signed up. It turned out to be a great group.

Tourney day was a warm one, but golfers sunscreened up. Six teams of three and one team of four kept fairway flow, and some impressive scores were handed in. Over a lunch of crisp salads and refreshing strawberry lemonade, served in the clubhouse, gals regaled in stories of extraordinary shots, of mulligans, trees, water, and anything else that obstructed the ball’s forward motion.

Sleeves of balls and baskets of Wallowa County home-canned goods were presented to winners. Overall field scores: Low Gross, Carrie Wallace, La Grande, 83; Low Net, Tori Soto, Enterprise, 60. Individual club scores: La Grande — Gross, Cally Goss, 87; Net, Marilyn Fallow, 77. Buffalo Peak — Gross, MaryLynn Townsend, 113. Alpine Meadows — Gross, Carol Marr, 85; Net, a tie, Pam Garrett/Rochelle Danielson, 70. Additional Awards/Flight One and Two: KP, Carrie Wallace, MaryLynn Townsend; Closest to the Line, Carol Marr, Rochelle Danielson; Long Drive, Cally Goss, Tori Suto; Long Putt, Cheri Lamb, Amy Stangel; 50/50 Pot, Kathy Reynolds; Play & Stay Wildhorse raffle, Laidee Ann Wolfe.
