Lady Cougs on a roll

After losing their first 11 basketball games of the season the Wallowa girls basketball team has won its last three contests and is playing with a lot more confidence.

"Even when we were losing I thought our defense was good," said Coach Greg Oveson. "You always have a chance to win a ballgame if you play good defense."

The Coug-gals rallied in the fourth quarter at Prairie City, outscoring their foe 16-6 to win that contest by a 43-37 score. On Saturday WHS won a low scoring affair against Jordan Valley in Wallowa, 30-26.

Overcoming a 31-27 deficit to start the fourth quarter, Wallowa was patient on offense in the final minutes and got some good shots at the basket, said Oveson. He said his troops hit some key free throws late in the game to help secure the win.

Against the Panthers Lynique Oveson led all scorers with 14 points, compared to an even dozen for teammate Caitlin Turner. Scoring 12 points apiece for Prairie City were Linda Black and Brittany Reid.

Wallowa hit an anemic two of 20 shots from the floor in the first half against Jordan Valley, but kept the game close, 12-10 in favor of the visitors, with tenacious defense and some equally poor shooting by the Lady Mustangs.

With 3:15 left in the game Lynique Oveson hit a field goal to give WHS the lead for keeps at 24-23. Chelsea Frei then followed with a field goal from the paint and Wallowa was off to the win.

Pressure defense forced the Lady Mustangs into a flurry of turnovers, a key factor in the telling statistic that Wallowa took 58 shots at the basket compared to 42 for their foe. Wallowa recorded 10 steals in the first quarter alone, but was only able to convert the turnovers into two points.

The Oveson twins, Lynique and Mysha, led Wallowa in scoring Saturday night with 11 and 10 points respectively. Anna Waltkins led Jordan Valley with seven points.
