After two years as the junior high volleyball coach Lil Conrad is back as the varsity coach at Enterprise High School. Forty-two years of experience should help to get Enterprise into one of the top five spots for this year’s district playoffs.

The varsity squad is set and ready to begin their season opener, which is this Thursday, Aug. 30, at home versus Imbler, starting with the freshman C team at 5 p.m.

The A team will play 15 games this year, with the district playoffs following.

The Outlaws will start their season with three veteran players returning this year. They are seniors, setter Myranda McFetridge, middle Elsa Steen, and, on the outside, Kylie Willis. Stephanie Simpson rounds out the senior squad.

Filling out the varsity roster are juniors, Ashtin Olsen, Callyn Stewart, Hannah Schaafsma, Hayley Riggs, and McKenna Miller. Sophomore Carsen Sajonia also made the A team.

Conrad said it’s going to be a tight Blue Mountain Conference this year. “Everybody is going to be tough,” she said.

Standout opponents this year will be Weston McEwen and Heppner. The Prairie City Invitational scheduled for Sept. 8 will help Enterprise to see how they measure up out.

Conrad’s hopes are high after finishing in the sixth spot last year in the Blue Mountain Conference. Conrad said, “We have a strong aggressive middle and good setters and outsiders; our utility players are good too. I’m hoping we finish in the top three this year.”

Lil Conrad returns as head coach this year replacing Amy Stangel who was to coach the team but decided with a newborn to be “a stay at home mom”.

Conrad started out her volleyball career playing in junior high school in Wallowa. From there she went on to play four years at what is now Eastern Oregon University. She retired as head coach at Enterprise in 1994 and from there went on to be a referee for ten years. Two years ago she went back to coaching the Enterprise junior high team. Conrad has come full circle. With Teah Jones as her assistant coach she is back. She said she loves the game of volleyball and wants to see if she is capable of coaching again at this level.

Conrad wants to remind people about this year’s Alumni vs Varsity game to be played Sept. 7. Any alumni players not signed up for the game and who want to participate can call her at the high school, 541-426-3193.
