One hundred runners and walkers filled the course at the 2002 Alder Slope Run/Walk last Saturday morning. Race Directors Sue Rodakowski and Michele Young were pleased with the turn out, but said that numbers were down from previous years. "Elgin and Union have races scheduled on the same day so we lost some of the people from Union County", Young said.

Two years ago participation swelled to 170 entries, only to fall off to 130 last year.

Jeffrey Bartmess from Portland led the runners in the 10K distance event crossing the finish line at the 42:06 mark. Bartmess bettered his last years finishing time by almost 17 minutes. Chris Uchison from Enterprise crossed the line five minutes and 23 seconds off of the pace at 47:29. Larry Nall of Joseph grabbed the number three spot with a time of 47:41.

EHS distance man Chris Lozier won the 5K run after posting a time of 20:13. Krista Stangel from Enterprise took the first place spot in the 1.2 mile run with a time of 7:52.

Ann Robinson took honors as the oldest participant in the walking event at 75. Robinson posted a time of 59:35 in the 5K walk.

Runners and walkers were in for a treat at the end of the race. Alpine Chiropractic gave out free ice packs for sore muscles. Massage by Rojean Paschal offered free massages to any participant that wanted one.
