The Joseph High football team suffered a humbling loss to defending state champ Dufur, in a home game Friday night. The final score was 58-20.
The Rangers had a core of returnees from last year's group, including senior running back Ty Wyman, senior defensive tackle K.C. McCullough and senior tight end Tyler Tibbets. Wyman ran for five touchdowns, Tibbets caught passes for two scores and McCullough made existence miserable for the Joseph backfield.
"They were faster and hit harder," Joseph senior running back Chris Harshman said. "They were so quick, we couldn't fill the holes in time."
The Eagles (1-1 record) had an early lead, 6-0, but it was short lived. Junior quarterback Erik Steen hit speedy receiver Gavin Baynes with a 27-yard scoring pass.
Before Joseph could score again, late in the third quarter, Dufur had made seven touchdowns. The damage came from a powerful running game. The Rangers garnered 477 yards on the ground on 42 carries.
Wyman ans Matt Hammel made long scoring runs.
The Eagles' second touchdown was a 9-yard run by junior back Clancy Warnock, and then Steen connected with Baynes again in the closing minutes. It was a 69-yard touchdown pass.
Baynes may have made just three receptions, but they cover 150 yards and two of them ended up being touchdowns, after he did some slick running.
