Team Enterprise-Wallowa is back.

Wrestling coaches from Enterprise and Wallowa have organized another strong team for the second winter as partners. Their single team combines grapplers from both high schools. Last year, two boys from each side advanced to the state championship tournament. Two of them, senior Alex Courtney and junior Brock Hayes, return for this season. They will lead a cast of veterans as well as more recruits.

"We're gonna be competitive, that's for sure," said Ray Hickman, the new coach at Enterprise. "It's nice having so many of our guys with Wallowa."

A number of the boys are back. A pair of sophomores, Austin Reimer and Salvador Mendez, team up to challenge 119-pound weight class. Senior Forrest Cox and junior Joseph Higginbotham wrestle 130 pounders. Hayes works in the 145, sophomore Sawyer Wick has the 152, while Courtney and junior Jordan Widener take on the 189. Junior Erich Roepke has 215.

Meanwhile, both coaches will train newcomers. They include some big boys. Senior Trent Martin, a former basketball player, will start in the 189-pound weight class. Senior Billy Lee, at 171 pounds, joined the team on the heels of Wallowa's long football season. Junior Jeff Tarvin, another 189 pounder, transferred to Wallowa after gaining experience on the mats at Hermiston and Irrigon. Sophomore Jacob Curtis has the heavyweights over 275.

The rest include freshmen. Patrick Rummel and Caden Christman both wrestle in the 103-pound weight class. Luke Moore and Kyle Roepke have the 112. Spencer Henninger is in 119, Sheldon Baty 125 and Justin Gladden 130. Next, Tristan Morehouse jumps up to 189.

The team also gained more wrestlers. Matyas Nagi, a foreign exchange student from Hungary, will compete in the 171-pound weight class. Sophomore Kyle Jennings and freshman Kody McManus recently joined.

"We're teaching them a lot," coach Mel Byers said. "We're two weeks behind, but they look really eager."

The local union will open this season Dec. 3 by defending its trophy at the Kickoff Tournament in Enterprise. Action starts at 10 a.m.
