Two eastern Oregon girls with Wallowa County ties are headed for the National Junior High Finals Rodeo Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

Jacie Jane Shaffer of Imbler, granddaughter of Wallowa County residents Donnie Schaeffer and Ron and Connie Goebel, will be competing in team roping, ribbon roping and light rifle shooting. Jacie, who is the daughter of Derek and Selina Shaffer of Summerville, recently placed 3rd in both team roping and ribbon roping and 2nd in light rifle at the state competition in Prineville.

Another area girl, Logan Nedrow of North Powder, who is the granddaughter of Greg and Monica Jennings of Joseph, will also head east. Nedrow, who is the daughter of Justin and Betsy Nedrow of North Powder, took 1st in breakaway calf roping at the Prineville state finals.

Roughly 1,000 contestants from 42 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia compete in the NJHFR, vying for a share of $75,000 in prizes and $100,000 in college scholarships. Des Moines is hosting the June 21-27 event for the first time this year. Fans can follow the event online at NHSRATV.com. The Saturday, June 27, championship performance will also be televised on the Cinch High School Rodeo Tour telecast series on RFD-TV and results will be updated on NHSRA.org daily.
