Five Wallowa County sports teams are among the best in the state when it comes to high school grade point averages.

The Wallowa High School football team recorded a cumulative 3.47 GPA to secure the top spot in the state among 1A division teams.

Scholar-athletes are honored each year by the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) and the Dairy Farmers of Oregon.

The Cougars will receive a plaque in honor of the outstanding scholastic achievement, and members of the team will receive a "Got Milk" sweatshirt and certificate. The awards will be presented later this fall.

Other Wallowa County teams that made the top 10 list included the Wallowa High School volleyball team, fifth with a 3.78 team GPA; the Enterprise High School girls cross-country team, second with a 3.75 GPA; the Enterprise High School boys cross-country team, ninth with a 3.53 GPA, and the Joseph High School football team, fourth with a 3.25 GPA. Each student on a top 10 team will receive a lapel pin in recognition of their achievement.

"The OSAA is proud to once again join the Dairy Farmers of Oregon in recognizing Oregon high school teams for their tremendous efforts in the classroom," said Tom Welter, OSAA executive director.
