Wallowa's Larae Guillory, Holli Barton and Lynique Oveson triggered a 10-0 run early in the fourth quarter to build a 47-35 lead, then held on to defeat the improving Joseph E-gals 49-44 in the opening round of the Wallowa Lions Basketball Tournament Friday night in Wallowa. The cruncher came in the middle of the run when Barton converted a 3-point bank shot from the top of the key.
Trailing 20-10 midway in the second quarter, the pesky E-gals, getting yeoman duty from junior center Anna Yost, went on a 9-point run of their own to close the gap to 20-19. But Barton netted another 3 pointer, Sandra Deal banked in a field goal and, following a rebound basket by Yost, Wallowa took a 25-21 lead at the half.
Joseph, which only led in the opening minutes, closed to within two points three times in the second half, but was repeatedly held off by Deal and Barton. Licia Miller scored 14 of her game high 18 points in the second half to keep JoHi close.
Cougar Mysha Oveson led Wallowa in scoring with 16 points, but was taken to the hospital early in the fourth period following a vicious collision with Miller. Barton ended the contest with 12 points, including three 3-pointers.
